Wound treatment
A cold sore lip starts with a local reddening, warming and itching. After that one or more closed lesions develop.
In the following days these lesions grow in size and open. The lesion liquid contains viruses and this virus containing liquid can infect others. This virus liquid is active in the first four days.
Subsequently the lesions coagulate to a cold sore wound. The area around the wound is still red and swollen. After that the cold sore wound starts and the healing phase takes often 10-12 days.
With the antiviral and sanitizing hand gel (alcohol) treatment the lesions stay small and do not open.
Curious is that a cold sore on the inter side of the lip heals faster than on the out side. Apparently keeping the wound wet has a positive effect on the healing time. A cold sore wound on the out side of the lips if untreated has a crust which is disfiguring. If the crust is not removed carefully, a blood stained wound is formed. Under the shower the crust on the wound is softened and can then easier be removed. Whether it is useful to remove the crust is as yet not clear, but a wound without a crust is more presentable.
A crust on the wound can be prevented by applying a Vaseline crème on the wound. With Vaseline (petroleum jelly) a thin (delicate) film is formed and in this way the wound is less disfiguring. It is important to apply Vaseline often, however it seems that the heal time is not shortened by Vaseline.
Despite Vaseline is used, during the night a crust on the wound is often formed. This crust can be removed neatly under the shower, but still it is a bit clumsy.
Known too is that disinfectant hand sanitizers (70% alcohol) kill viruses effectively (Covid-19). A hand sanitizer can also be used to inactivate the herpes virus on the lips. The alcohol penetrates the skin and which makes it extra effective in deactivation of the cold sore virus. When the hand gel applied to a closed blister, does not grow, dries up and the wound heals in a shorter time.

Background information
Cold sore blisters are a manifestation of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1). This virus has nestled itself in nerves cells. The nerve cells for this virus, the ganglion of Gasser of the nerves trigeminus (facial nerve) and is situated in the occiput (the back of the head), below the brains.
This virus is mostly in a latent state.
As soon as this virus notices that the immune system is vulnerable, like by sun bathing or stress, it starts multiplying itself. The so formed contagious liquid, containing new viruses, will be secreted via a nerve to the lips. The lips will be locally infected by the liquid, start to itch and become red. After some time, a swelling is observed and vesicles are formed with this virus liquid. The vesicles ripe and subsequently the vesicles open. In the next phase the open vesicles coagulate to an open wound, the cold sore blister.
In a few days, about 4, is the inflammation stops, but by then you have a cold sore wound.
Healing of the wound takes, like most of the wounds of this size, 5-10 days.
By careful management of the wound the healing time can be shorted a bit.
If you want to prevent the formation of cold sore lips then you have to stop the reproduction process of the virus in the first hours. This can be done with an antiviral treatment and by applying sanitizing hand gel (alcohol).

Preventing Cold Sores with a stress reducing medicines / tranquilizes / sleeping pills, a new method.
At the first awareness of itching of the lips a sleeping tablet must be taken, gradually dissolved between lip and teeth. If at a later time the itching returns this can then be repeated, but just on the first day. The sleeping tablets can be Alprazolam (0,25 mg), Diazepam (5 mg), Lormetazepam (1 mg), Oxazepam (5 mg). Even when an outbreak is expected the treatments can be started.
If you are late and swelling have already started and vesicles formed. The treatment can be at this stage and when itching is returning (just on the first day). After the first day infection is the inflammation stage (3-4 days) followed by the healing stage of the wounds (4-10 days). Acting after swelling had taken place healing takes now much longer, however, shorter than if no medicines had been taken.
The virus production stops after one day and after that the medicine has no more use.
Thus the sooner the treatment is started, the more effective the method is.
Even starting when an outbreak is expected is effective.
If the vesicles open and a wound is formed a Vaseline ointment can be applied.
The Vaseline prevents crust formation and the wound is in that way less disfiguring.
Probably this treatment does not interfere with the ointments and can be used in combination with these ointments.
Advantages at medication one the first awareness of an itching of the lips:
- treatment at the source
- preventing outbreaks to take place
- treatment before an outbreak is expected, before the first itching
- treatment possible on the inner part of the lips and on the outer/inner lip region
When treatment is commenced when vesicles already have been formed:
- no new vesicles are formed
- the vesicles do not coagulate to a larger wound
- less danger of infecting others
- not crust formed
- less disfiguring
- faster healing
- in the future less new outbreaks
- treatment possible on the inner part of the lips and on the outer/inner lip region
- treatment in combination with an ointment is possible
Be careful these sleeping tablet and other medicines against stress can influence you ability to drive. Keep this in mind.

Cold sores
Cold sores are annoying and disfiguring.
Outbreaks of the virus can only be stopped before a cold sore has developed.
The problem is that the virus production must be stopped before the cold sore is visible.
Cold sores can be treated with an antiviral therapy.
If you have had earlier outbreaks you might have developed a feeling when an outbreak is expected.
Treatments are possible if you start as soon as you think that the virus becomes active or when you feel the first itching on your lip. Starts the medication immediately, do not wait an hour.
After the first hour the virus production has started and the development of the cold sore cannot any more be stopped.
The developing cold sores can be treated with an antiviral therapy. It has been found that is can also be treated with disinfectant hand sanitizers (alcohol).
Known too is that disinfectant hand sanitizers (70% alcohol) kills viruses effectively (Covid-19). A hand sanitizer can also be used to inactivate the herpes virus on the lips. The alcohol penetrates the skin and which makes it effective in deactivation of the cold sore virus. When the hand gel applied to a closed blister, the blister dries up and the wound heals in a short time. The sanitizing hand gel should preferably only once.
Antiviral compounds for treating cold sores are Acyclovir and Valacyclovir. These compounds have little side effects.
